By the time William and Mary came to the throne in 1688, Purcell held several court appointments and was recognised as the leading English composer of the day; so he was expected to write music for major royal functions. This week's programmes will feature some of the odes he composed for Queen Mary's birthdays between 1689 and 1694 and the music for her funeral in 1695, along with other works written over the same period.
