Respighi (1879-1936) and Casella ([number removed]) the leading representatives of a whole generation of Italian composers who reacted against the national obsession with opera. Their aim was to reestablish a tradition of instrumental music such as existed in their country in the past, and, striving to create a synthesis of old and new, they often presented forgotten music of an earlier epoch in brilliant modern orchestrations.
