In 1745 Thomas Arne was appointed composer to the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, a position he held for many years.
It was not uncommon for these popular open air concerts to commence with a Symphony: Arne's Fourth Symphony in c minor is arguably his greatest. This evening's selection of Vauxhall songs are among his best but mostly completely unknown.
