A personal selection of records

Canaletto at Warwick Castle
The second of six talks by different speakers on important paintings in British collections. In about 1749, in the course of his ten-year stay in England, Canaletto painted several views of Warwick Castle. Two of the finest of them - and amongst the finest paintings he ever did, in England or in Venice - have always hung at the Castle until they were sold very recently. Now their future is in the balance. Two museums are attempting to save them from export - Birmingham, and the Ashmolean at Oxford. David Piper, himself the Director of the Ashmolean, relates one of the two paintings to the structure of Warwick Castle as it is today.
