Samuel Barber 's Piano Sonata, Op 26. was commissioned for the 25th anniversary of the American League of Composers. Vladimir Horowitz gave the first performance of this transcendentally difficult work in Carnegie Hall in 1950. Today a symphony concert Is being given in Peking. By arrangement with Peking Radio, it will be beamed direct by satellite to Paris where It will be broadcast by France Musique. Radio 3 is relaying this first-ever live broadcast in stereo from Peking by courtesy of Radio France. It gives a unique opportunity of hearing Chinese musicians as they make music - the music of both their own culture and of Western Europe.
