In 1951 Kathleen Ferrier sang the part of Orfeo in Gluck's opera in a production by Netherlands Opera. The recent discovery of a recording made live at the time has led to that performance being transferred to long-playing records. John Steane introduces the opera and discusses in general the art of Kathleen Ferrier as well as her performances in the role of Orfeo - a part she made very much her own in the years immediately after the war.
The cast in this performance also includes and with the NETHERLANDS OPERA CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA, conducted by CHARLES BRUCK : records

[Starring] Nigel Stock as the Old Beyle, Christopher Good as the Young Beyle

Henri Beyle 11783-1842), known to the world as Stendhal, discourses on his life and loves.
with and

'Love has always been for me the greatest thing in life, perhaps the only thing.
The other day. dreaming about life by the sea shore at Civitavecchia, where for my sins I am consul for France, I realised that my life could be summed up in the names of the women I had loved or who had loved me. I sat on the little bench near Trajan's tower, so prettily rebuilt by Bernini for Urban VII. and wrote their initials in the sand...'
