' We like to think that our job in theoretic physics is to try to explain why nature is the way it is in terms of a very few fundamental principles. I wish we had a theory that told us definitely what to expect-how many quarks, how many leptons, but I'm afraid we are not in that position.'
Quarks and leptons are two classes of the subatomic forms of matter that at present appear to be elementary - elementary in the sense that physicists have not yet succeeded in explaining them in terms of anything else.
Steven Weindberg , Higgans Professor of Physics at Harvard University, talks to John Maddox about the ' tribal ' relationships between the various forms of matter.
