It was probably not composed by J. S. Bach , not composed for organ, not transcribed by J. S. Bach. not originally in D minor, and not called Toccata and Fugue.
Peter Williams traces the history of the ' best-known organ work' and suggests one way to approach the problem of the source of the music. His solution is played on a baroque violin by JAAP SCHROEDER.
