Heir to Verdi. The Puccini family of Lucca, like the Bachs, were a musical dynasty, and Giacomo was expected to follow earlier generations of his family by becoming a church musician. But as a teenager, he was bowled over by a performance of Verdi's recent masterpiece Aida and knew that he had to write operas. Even the instrumental and choral pieces of his youth show clear signs of the stage dramatist Puccini was soon to become.
