In January 1518, an unprecedented musical contest took place between the two greatest households in early Tudor England. It was during the Christmas celebrations of the previous month that King Henry VIII began to recognise a rival group in the chapel choir of his most illustrious statesman, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. The King decided to arrange a competition between the two chapels, and a contemporary account of the event concluded that the singers in Wolsey's chapel were superior. The King was not amused. David Skinner explores the early years of the college that Wolsey founded at Oxford - Cardinal College, now known as Christ Church. The
