Philharmonic's traditional concert of music by the Strauss family and friends. This year's guest conductor is Zubin Mehta , an old friend of the orchestra who likes to put them through their paces on the byways as well as the highways of the Viennese repertoire. Pelleas et Melisande
A performance of Debussy's opera given at last year's Salzburg Festival. American soprano Dawn Upshaw leads the cast as the enigmatic Princess Melisande, who marries Prince Golaud but is drawn to his younger brother, Pelleas. Robert Wilson's subtle and allusive production makes strikingly creative use of the notoriously wide stage of Salzburg's Grosses Festspielhaus, while in the pit, the playing of Britain's Philharmonia, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling , was, according to critic Michael Kennedy , "as poetic as it was precise".
