(Die schone Milllerin)
Schubert's cycle of 20 songs to poems by Wilhelm Muller sung in a new translation by Clare Campbell
'This translation was purpose-built to be sing-able, that is to fit the music in sound as well as the German words in meaning. Listening is enriched by understanding the detail of what is meant: Schubert's genius for mood-painting is missed if one doesn't follow all that.'

The two waves of modern feminism have had different directions and produced different literatures. In the third and last of his three talks on the literary treatment of love and marriage, Laurence Lerner contrasts the attitudes of the female emancipation movement and women's liberation. And he discusses the handling of love and marriage by some recent novelists, among them Elizabeth Jane Howard and Doris Lessing. who evidently take a more sanguine view of the value of fiction than did Beatrice Webb.

A portrait of the later life of John Henry New man. written by LEO KNOWLES. With
John Franklyn-Robbins as John Henry Newman
'Because I have not pushed myself forward, because I have not dreamed of saying "see what I am doing and have done ", because I have not retailed gossip, flattered great people, and sided with this or that party. I am nobody. I have no friend in Rome: I have laboured in England, to he misrepresented, back-bitten and scorned.'
