by Ernst Gombrich
In four talks, Sir Ernst Gombrich considers the psychological and philosophical origins of present-day attitudes towards the idea of ' the primitive ' in the practice and criticism of art.
'Civilisation is sickness, barbarism rejuvenation.' These words by Gauguin foreshadow the 'cultural primitivism' of our century in which artists have looked upon tribal art and the art of children with envy and admiration. Sir Ernst analyses the implications of this passionate rejection of Western skills and the dilemmas to which it has led.
