Before The Man Outside, Baiint Andras Varga tells the extraordinary story of how Sandor Balassa progressed from unlettered workman to opera composer.

A modern Hungarian opera in five movements: music by Sandor Balassa. Libretto by GEZA FODOR based on a play by WOLF-GANG BORCHERT , a German soldier who ' starved. froze and killed ' and died young in 1947. His anti-war views are projected into the character of Beckmann, a soldier returned from the war who feels unbearable guilt and responsibility for his wartime actions. This Hungarian Radio studio recording of 1977 was the opera's first performance.
A dramatisation of the libretto, translated by GYULA GULYAS , precedes each movement.
