At the Court of Gustav III. Sweden's ' Roi Solell ': [number removed]
The death of Gustav III , shot at a masquerade at the opera in 1792, had paralysing effect on Swedish culture. His active support for all the arts, in particular theatre and opera, had been a constant source of inspiration to authors, actors, singers and composers alike.
Gustav's dream of creating a national musical and dramatic theatre - closely modelled on French Ideals, yet at the same time individual - exercised an enormous influence on Swedish artistic life.
