A report by Alastair Hetherington
The island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is like no other community in Britain. At its heart is the Free Church with its insistence on a rigorous observance of the Sabbath. In recent months the exploitation of offshore oil has led to the influx of several hundred workers from the mainland. The old way of life is threatened.

with Tito Gobbi
'The interpretation is more important than the beautiful sound, but take care of the beautiful sound.'
So says Tito Gobbi, world-renowned baritone, who at one stage in his career had 137 roles in his repertoire. In a conversation with Harold Rosenthal, he talks about some of these roles, among them Scarpia, Figaro in Rossini's opera, Simone Boccanegra, and Iago in Verdi's Otello.
With illustrations on records.
