1: Tennyson. Alfred Tennyson was Queen Victoria's favourite poet and the grand old man of English poetry, who was made Poet Laureate at the age of 50. His career spanned the greater part of the 19th century and, in his old age, he received an endless stream of visitors - sometimes composers, sometimes tourists who would turn up at his house just to stare. Robert King begins a week in residence at the court of Lully's employer, Louis XIV, by tracing the composer's rise from humble Italian roots to an official position with power to control music performance throughout France.
