Eighteenth-century Turkey is the setting for one of Mozart's most charming comic creations. Spanish nobleman Belmonte arrives on the Turkish coast to search for his fiancée, Konstanze, who is being held captive together with her maid Blondchen and Belmonte's servant Pedrillo in the palace of Pasha Selim. When an escape attempt fails they are brought before the Pasha and condemned to death. The events that follow take an unexpected turn.
