Michael Berkeley talks to the novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard, whose published work includes 12 novels, a collection of short stories, many television plays and an autobiographical memoir entitled Slipstream. The granddaughter of the composer Sir Arthur Somervell, Elizabeth Jane Howard has always loved music, and her choices include a Scarlatti sonata played by her friend, pianist Nina Milkina, concertos by members of the Bach family and Mozart, a song by Richard Strauss and Brahms's St Anthony Variations.

Bellini's first major operatic success, written in 1827, is a hot-headed Romantic tale of politics and love in 13th-century Sicily. Count Gaultiero, defeated by his rival Ernesto, has been driven into exile, where he takes to the life of a marauding pirate. Meanwhile, his lover Imogene has been forced to marry Ernesto, and the scene is set for Gaultiero's desperate attempt to win her back.
