Stephanie Hughes presents live music from Europe and Canada, played by some of today's leading artists, including Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev, Musica Antiqua, Koln, under its founder Reinhard Goebel, and the young Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who leads the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Debussy's Prelude a I'Apres-midi d'un Faune. Stephen Johnson presents the first of two programmes drawing on BBC archive recordings made by the conductor Adrian Boult. A pioneering figure in the history of music-making in the BBC, he was the first principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. With part of the first London performance of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra as well as English music by two Boult favourites, George Butterworth and Vaughan Williams.
