Talk of the Devil: Faust
The tale of Dr Faustus -the man who sold his soul to the devilish Mephistopheles in exchange for material gifts - has inspired artists, writers and poets for centuries. Interest was further fuelled during the 19th century, largely due to the enormous popularity of the version by Goethe. In today's programme, lain Burnside explores the legend and its pervasive influence, and presents a feast of Faustian music, including pieces by Bedrich Smetana ,
Franz Schubert , Hector Berlioz , Charles Gounod and Robert Schumann.
