There is no doubt that the music of Byrd, Gibbons and Tomkins marked a golden age of English church music, and the sound of angelic choirboys soaring among the stained glass has become as quintessentially English as cricket and tea-drinking. But recent research suggests that a more virile sound may be appropriate, as Paul McCreesh explains in introducing this concert given in St Alban 's,
Highgate in Birmingham, with his Gabrieli Consort and Players.
