A Magpie Called Igor
Igor Stravinsky was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. But he was also a musical magpie-thieving shamelessly from earlier composers to create something new. This week,
Stravinsky expert Jonathan Cross finds out how and why he did it. 1: Reworking the Past. For his 1920 ballet Pulcinella,
Stravinsky rewrote 18th-century pieces by Pergolesi and Domenico Gallo - and almost single-handedly invented neoclassicism in music. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto
No 3 in G, BWV1048, is placed alongside Stravinsky's Concerto in E flat
(Dumbarton Oaks). Plus music by fellow neoclassicists Ravel and Poulenc and a more recent exponent, Michael Torke.
