2: Farewell to Folklore: 1949-58
Lutoslawski attempted to keep a low profile throughout the 1950s, working as a staff composer for Polish radio, writing children's songs and music for films and the theatre. The Concerto for Orchestra, a commission for the Warsaw
Philharmonic Orchestra, established Lutoslawski as the country's leading composer. Afterthis he drew a line under what had been a profoundly difficult time and took the first of several steps towards developing a highly personal musical language. Presented by Donald Macleod. Chris de Souza presents the second in a series of concerts from St George's Bristol featuring wind ensembles. Beethoven's music for wind was composed mostly in the early part of his career, when he still lived in Bonn. The Wind Octet in Eflat was subsequently made available as a string quintet, but the Endymion Ensemble play it here in its original form, coupled with Hanns Eisler 's Divertimento for wind quintet.
