Michael Berkeley 's guest is the Australian novelist Tim Winton , whose latest book,
Dirt Music, was shortlisted forthe Booker Prize last autumn. A previous novel, The Riders, also made the Booker shortlist in 1995, and Cloudstreet was recently dramatised at the National Theatre. His eclectic musical choices reflect his preoccupations with landscape and man's place within it.

Jenufa
A new production of Janacek's opera. The eponymous heroine is pregnant by love-rat and braggart Steva. His half-brother, Laca, is devotedly in love with Jenufa but turns on her in a fit of jealousy. When Steva sees her disfigured beauty he rejects her. Then Kostelnicka, Jenufa's disapproving stepmother, drowns the baby. Will Jenufa be able to turn tragedy into happiness?
