In an extended interview, Sarah Dunant talks to the historian Niall Ferguson. Still in his thirties, Ferguson has already gained wide recognition for his work. He talks about his latest project, Empire, a radical reappraisal of the British Empire, reflects on the controversy caused by The Pity of War (his book about the First World War) and discusses why he regards engagement with the media as an essential part of his role as an historian.
