Rve Femmes Fatales
With Peggy Reynolds.
4: Alma Mahler is the name by which the black-haired beauty Alma
Schindler, bom in Vienna in 1879, is best remembered today - Gustav Mahler was her first husband. But not her last: the long list of her husbands and lovers included the cream of Austrian artistic circles.
Alma Mahler was also something of a composer in her own right. And among her other claims to fame was saving the autograph of Bruckner's third symphony.

4: Opera for All. Hamburg's opera house was one of the first in Europe to be opened to the general public. Despite his contractual obligations as a church musician, not even the threat of dismissal deterred
Telemann from writing operas for the new theatre. Simon Heighes introduces highlights from the comic singspiel Damon and the recently rediscovered Orpheus, a powerful reworking of the famous myth comparable with the masterpieces of Monteverdi and Gluck.

Jewish Music
Many composers of western art music are of Jewish origin, and many non-Jewish composers have chosen to incorporate Jewish melodies into their music. Verity Sharp and Alex Knapp look at the music of composers like Bloch, Schoenberg and Bernstein and ask why so many musicians have been inspired by Jewish melodies.

What does reading the Bible as literature rather than history reveal about the ancient world? Paul Allen talks to Thomas L Thompson , whose new book, The Bible in History: How Writers Create a Past, contributes to one of the most controversial debates in cultural history. There is more biblical conflict in Nick Darke 's new play, Riot, when a dispute among Cornish fishermen over Sunday observance turns into a battle between rival towns: a report from tonight's opening at the Royal National Theatre. Plus views of Piranesi's monumental prison series, on display at the Courtauld Institute for the first time.
