"I am still just what I've always been - a simple Czech musician ..."
Susan Sharpe presents a week of programmes featuring Dvorak's
"simple Czech music" which suggest that he was not so simple and indeed not always so Czech. Today, she looks at some of his earliest successes, including his stirringly nationalistic Hymnus - specially recorded in English for this series - and a song cycle sublimating Dvorak's lost love into love for his country. Plus one of the less pleasant types from Czech legend in the first of five symphonic poems - The Water Goblin. Producer David Gallagher
