Uve from the Met: II Trovatore
A gypsy woman burns a baby in revenge for her own mother's execution as a witch. She claims the child was her own, but 20 years later, as her "son" is hanged on the orders of the Count di Luna , his real identity is revealed. The tragic revelation is a fitting climax to one of Verdi's most compelling dramas, which combines the supernatural, love and jealousy - all the main ingredients of opera. Sung in Italian.

Another from the series of newly commissioned experiments in creative radio.
The Church of Lanza. Mario Lanza had a singing career that lasted ten years, and he cancelled almost as many concerts as he gave. He was a boxer and a gargantuan eater who only ever sang one complete opera in public. Lanza died 40 years ago this year, an obese, bloated and exhausted young man. However he remains one of the most celebrated - and, for some, the most execrable - tenor voices of the century. In an original sound piece for Radio 3, Jakko Jakszyk weaves the voices of Lanza's family, friends and acolytes into a musical contemplation of Lanza - man and myth. Producer Simon Elmes

Cassandra Wilson is widely acclaimed as one of the most inventive and best-loved vocalists of her generation. Her distinctive, sultry voice has great range and is equally at ease breathing new life into jazz standards or reinventing pop classics. In recent years, she has incorporated a wider range of material, including rock and blues. With this concert, recorded at the Lincoln Center in New
York, Wilson returns to the musical influences of her childhood with her latest project, a tribute to the music of Miles Davis , with unique interpretations of the trumpeter's repertoire, several of which contain newly written lyrics. Also, 40 years ago, Miles Davis went into the studio to start recording Kind of Blue, which was to become a seminal album.
Featuring a line-up including John Coltrane , Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans , Kind of Blue helped popularise modal jazz and introduced two new standards, So What and All Blues. Jazz on 3 celebrates this jazz lover's all-time favourite.
