In 1943, Menuhin commissioned a solo sonata from Bartok - a work that is now one of the cornerstones of the solo violin repertoire. In the sixties and seventies, Menuhin went on to commission new works from many of the leading figures of the day, among them Malcolm Williamson , Andrzej Panufnik and Lennox Berkeley. Lynne Walker revisits these works and finds out how Menuhin approached new music as a supportive mentor and expert performer.
