With Geoffrey Smith. In the last decade of his life, Duke Ellington created musical impressions of the Far East and New Orleans, as well as a full-length ballet, The River. But his main focus was religious music, in three concerts of sacred works. The last was presented at Westminster Abbey, only a few months before his death in 1974.

Russell Davies presents a history of jazz, from its earliest stirrings to the end of the millennium.
17: Early Chamber Jazz
Delicacy and understatement may not be qualities automatically associated with early jazz, but chamber jazz groups have flourished since the twenties. The collaborations of violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang , delicate duets by Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer , and the subtle explorations of Red Norvo, set the tone for chamber jazz from the earliest times. And then
Benny Goodman 's quartet, which included
Teddy Wilson on piano and Lionel Hampton on vibes, produced some of the finest jazz in the history of music.
