Russell Davies presents a history of jazz, from its earliest stirrings to the end of the millennium.
Musicians had been moving towards swing ever since Louis Armstrong, playing in King Oliver's Creole Jazz Orchestra, started taking every opportunity to give a triplet feel to the beat. Then the tuba was replaced by a new rhythm section of guitar and string bass. But swing only emerged fully with the smooth, lithe unison riffs developed by big bands in the thirties.

Verdi's four-act opera Ernani in a performance given in December at the Vienna State Opera. Based on Victor Hugo 's play, it unfolds a tale of conflict and rivalry set in Spain, where the outlaw Ernani and his sworn enemy Don Carlo - the king - find themselves in love with the same woman. Elvira languishes in the clutches of her elderly guardian - a metaphor for Austrian dominion - and Ernani may only rescue her at a terrible price. Written when he was just 30 for the Fenice theatre in Venice, Ernani was hugely popular and was the work that established
Verdi as one of the foremost opera composers of his day. It marked his first collaboration with librettist
Francesco Maria Piave , soon to become his most trusted collaborator, and was later the first
Verdi opera to be performed in Britain. Sung in Italian.

SOUNDING THE CENTURY

Tonight and tomorrow evening, an opportunity to hear four substantial pieces by one of the century's most strikingly original composers, the Catalan-born Roberto Gerhard , who studied with Granados and Pedrell in his native Barcelona and later with Schoenberg. After the Spanish Civil
War, he settled in England, where he forged a distinctive, highly colourful style as a composer of brilliantly orchestrated scores whose complexity is rigorously subordinated to the higher goal of powerful musical communication - Gerhard said that the sense of his music should come across to the listener without the need for explanatory programme notes. Tonight's concert includes the rarely performed original version of the second symphony, with its strange percussion sounds and an extraordinary final scherzo - one of his most striking creations. Ballamy's Food for Quartet - a new Anglo-Norwegian collaboration between lain Ballamy (saxophones), Thomas Stronen (drums), Mats
Eilerstein (bass) and Arve Henrikson (prepared trumpet and effects). The combination of a tight rhythm section and two brass players produces music which is at once beautiful, humorous and surprising. The project was commissioned by the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and recorded there in April. It is also the 40th anniversary of John Coltrane 's Giant Steps album, and Jazz on 3 assesses its lasting impact on contemporary jazz.
