Russell Davies presents a 52-part history of jazz, from its earliest stirrings until the end of the millennium.
19: Swing Takes Over. Musicians had been moving towards swing ever since Louis Armstrong , playing in King Oliver's Creole Jazz Orchestra, started taking every opportunity to give a triplet feel to the beat. Then the tuba was replaced by a new rhythm section of guitar and string bass. But swing only emerged fully with the smooth, lithe unison riffs developed by big bands in the 1930s.
