This year is the 150th year since the onset of the Great
Famine in Ireland. In this first of three programmes, Nicholas Carolan explores its expression in music. Archival and commercial recordings of keens for the dead, contemporary local songs in the Irish language, English-language street ballads and later Irish-
American compositions bring an echo of the national calamity that has left an indelible mark on the character of modem Ireland.

As the mirror evolved from a pool of water to the modem looking-glass, a variety of associations and attributes attached to it - vanity, narcissism, decadence, fear ...
Mirrors were instruments with magical qualities capable of stealing the soul, or given by the aristocracy as gifts of great prestige.
This programme takes a look at the evolution of a now commonplace device and at what it has meant to people down the ages.
Producer Lyn Champion
