Telemann's Orpheus, first performed in 1726, includes an additional character not usually found in tellings of the myth - Queen Orasia; she loves Orpheus, but her love is unrequited and in her fury she lets loose the vipers that kill her rival Eurydice. The opera, sung in a mixture of German, French and Italian, was recently rediscovered, having been lost since Telemann's time.
This performance was given last autumn in Berlin.
