THE FORTIES

The last of the series tracing the story of Myra Hess 's famous chamber concerts, presented by Robert Philip. As the Second World War drew to a close, Hess's concerts played host to visitors from Free France, including
Poulenc and Bernac and violinists Thibaud and Neveu. But the end of hostilities also meant the demise of the series after six-and-a-half years of daily concerts.

Carl Davis introduces music composed between the 1930s and 50s for films made in Britain.
Including works by Alwyn, Ron Goodwin ,
Bernard Stevens , Brian Easdale , John Addison , Arnold,
Ireland and Lambert, with several recordings made specially for the programme of scores that have not been performed since they were commissioned.
Carl Davis also talks to some of the composers or those closely associated with them about the films and the technique of writing film music.

FAIREST ISLE

A comic opera in three acts by Nicholas Maw , with a libretto by Beverley Cross, in a new BBC studio recording made specially for Fairest Isle. First performed in 1970, this colourful, inventive score with a cast of wittily drawn characters is set in the Irish village of Ballinvourney in 1875 and charts the efforts of a group of local stalwarts to get rid of the 31st Royal Lancers regiment, who have been billetted on them.
