1: Bonn. Beethoven worked at the court of the Elector Maximilian Franz in various capacities, and with an orchestra of over 40 players, musical life was lively. He wrote his Octet for wind in 1792, aged only 20, and by the time he was 24 he had composed his first piano concerto, which he performed at his public debut in Vienna. In 1955 art historian Nikolaus Pevsner delivered the BBC Reith Lectures on The
Englishness of English Art. Until recently all but one of the programmes were thought to be lost, but a search of a BBC basement has just revealed an unopened brown paper parcel containing a hitherto unknown mint recording of the lectures.
Professor Ian Christie of Birkbeck College, London, has been investigating.
