Claire Martin introduces a concert by the BBC Big Band, directed by William Russo , recorded before an invited audience at the BBC Radio Theatre in March. Russo was chief composer and arranger of the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the fifties and directed the London Jazz Orchestra in the seventies. The London Sinfonietta, conducted by Oliver Knussen, play three UK first performances: Hans Werner Henze's "Trauerode fur Margaret Geddes"; "Dark Crossing" by Mark-Anthony Turnage; and Robert Zuidam's "McGonagall Lieder" featuring soprano Lucy Shelton and pianists Rolf Hind and Nicolas Hodges.
