Thomas Tallis was employed as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal under Elizabeth I and remained there for the rest of his life. He continued to write simple, English chordal anthems alongside magnificent Latin polyphony in accordance with the desires of the queen. He decided to try and find a wider audience for his music and joined forces with the young William Byrd to publish a collection of their own pieces.
Donald Macleod introduces a selection of works from that collection, together with one of his best known pieces - his setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah.
