By the time Edward VI came to the throne his father had dissolved the monasteries and reformed the church. Edward continued along the same path, and shortly after he succeeded to the throne Protestantism was established as the country's official religion. Tallis and his fellow composers were charged with devising appropriate settings forthe new Anglican liturgy in "the language of the people". Donald Macleod looks at a selection ofTallis's anthems written under Edward's austerity measures, and contrasts them with the luxuriantly florid polyphony of Gaude Gloriosa Dei Mater-which celebrated the return of Roman Catholicism under Mary Tudor. With Donald Macleod.
