To celebrate the centenary of the composer's birth, Dennis Marks presents a day of programmes exploring the life and music of William Walton, including "postcards" recorded at his home on the island of Ischia and programmes devoted to Walton and his music. Contributors include his widow Lady Walton, Walton biographer Michael Kennedy and broadcaster Humphrey Burton. Friends and former colleagues, including Hans Werner Henze, Julian Bream and Andre Previn, provide their reminiscences. Dennis Marks begins by tracing Walton's early life from his birthplace in Oldham to the pubs and elegant drawing rooms of Chelsea.

Also, Walton conducting his Coronation Te Deum at Westminster Abbey the following year and the Bagatelles performed by Julian Bream (guitar).

Michael White, accompanied by Lady Walton, explores the composer's study, left just as it was on the day he died.
Although Walton's music brought him fame, he was prey to insecurity and vulnerable to criticism. Humphrey Burton unmasks the man behind the music.
4.15 Postcard from Ischia - I Giardini la Mortella
While Walton worked in his study, Lady Walton spent hours transforming their garden into what Michael White describes as a tropical paradise.

6.30 Opera on 3: Troilus and Cressida
Humphrey Burton presents a semi-staged concert performance of Walton's opera recorded last Thursday at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The story, set against the background of the Trojan War, involves the love of Prince Troilus for Cressida, daughter of a High Priest. Cressida is deceived by her manipulative father into betraying Troilus and the opera ends with her suicide.
