5: Heiligenstadt. Beethoven first referred to difficulties with his hearing in 1801. A year later, hopeful of recovery, he went for six months to Heiligenstadt. While he was there he wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he described his despair.

A Week at the Ballet
5: Stravinsky. David Bintley rounds off his week with a celebration of the greatest ballet composer of the 20th century. The programme follows Stravinsky from his youthful experiments with rhythm and harmony in Petrushka to the reworking of other composers'music (Tchaikovsky in The Fairy's Kiss) and the radically spare sounds of his late work in Agon.
