Max Roach. Julian Joseph introduces recordings by the great drummer and composer who was a major driving force in the evolution of postwar American music. His quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown was one of the most influential small groups of the early 1950s. Roach continued to explore new ground with tenorist Sonny Rollins and laterwith vocalist Abbey Lincoln , with whom he recorded the politically charged Freedom Nowsuite in 1960.

Mary Hamer's new book, Incest: a New Perspective, explores everything from the neurological damage incestuous relationships are said to cause, to the portrayal of incest in film and literature. Sarah Dunant talks to Hamer and others about whether we are any closer to being able to understand this most taboo of subjects and explores Hamer's thesis that incestuous abuse is the price paid by a society that insists on clear norms of masculinity and femininity.
