The artist Mark Gertler was a pacifist and refused to support Britain's involvement in the First World War. One newspaper described his 1915 painting The Creation of Eve as an example of "Hunnish indecency". Jacob Epstein was a pioneer of modern sculpture in Britain, yet he always felt an outsider in his adopted country. On the publication of two new biographies, Lisa Appignanesi considers the reputations of both these controversial early 20th-century artists.
Plus another in the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World" series.
