In 1817, Weber arrived in Dresden to create a royal company for German-language opera. Although he had excellent resources available to him, with an outstanding orchestra and plenty of good singers, he felt undermined by the pro-Italian opera faction present in Dresden at the time, and was further belittled by discovering that his own title was to be Musikdirektor, ratherthan the more prestigious Kapellmeister. Aldeburgh Festival
