2: Chamber Works
In the early 1970s, Knussen wrote two chamber works that initiated the childlike playfulness that would surface again in his two operas. Today Oliver Knussen joins Donald Macleod to talk about these smaller works written while studying in the United States in his early twenties, and those he wrote on his return to Britain, including Triptych.

The shadow of death hovered over the French Court during the early years of the 18th century, and this programme reflects the intensity of those troubled years with Michel Richard de Lalande's "De Profundis", sung at the funeral of Louis XIV, and the celebrated Requiem Mass by Andre Campra.

Richard Coles explores ourfascination with sundials. From the proposed Solar Pyramid, a 40-metre public sculpture in Chesterfield that will be even biggerthan the Angel of the North, to the red planet, where Nasa measures the Martian day from the Mars Surveyor Lander, sundials are everywhere: testament to man's compulsion to focus the movement of the cosmos on to a needle to reveal time.

Fiona Talkington unwinds to summery sounds from Bollywood Brass and acoustic folk from the 1970s by Nic Jones and the New Victory Band.
