Massenet's opera was first performed in Brussels in 1881 and later conquered the other great opera houses of Europe - despite a ban imposed by the Archbishop of Lyon. The opera fell from grace afterthe Second World War but, with its heady mixture of sensuality and asceticism and its struggle between an enslaving eroticism and saintliness, it is once again finding favour.
