The current Glyndebourne production of this work comes to the Proms. The original play by Wedekind was dark and bleak, characterising Lulu as a tragic femme fatale caught in a sordid web of murder and desire, but Berg's music transformed the work with its sumptuous orchestral colour and ravishing vocal line for Lulu herself.
