The Ostankino archive, tucked away in a Moscow suburb, contains over 400,000 tapes of music heard on Russian television and radio over the last 70 years. Telstar have secured the rights for release of this catalogue on their new label Revelation. Robert Cowan
has been listening to the first 30 releases, which include artists such as Sviatoslav Richter , Emil Gilels , Leonid Kogan and David Oistrakh.

This week, Michael Berkeley talks to Tessa Blackstone, whose many prominent public roles include Master of Birkbeck College in the University of London, front-bench Opposition Spokesman on Foreign Affairs in the House of Lords, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Public Policy Research, and Chairman of the Ballet Board of the Royal Opera House. Baroness Blackstone's musical choices range from operatic and instrumental music by Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner to ballet music by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, and Fred Astaire singing Jerome Kern's Pick Yourself Up.

Conductor Simon Rattle 's name is synonymous with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, but over the years he has worked with many other orchestras, in this country and abroad. Michael Birkett presents an eight-part series looking at some of these collaborations.
2: Rotterdam Philharmonic
Rattle first conducted this orchestra in 1978 and immediately took to what he describes as their "wild and cosmopolitan" qualities. For a time he was their principal guest conductor, and he still performs with them regularly. Michael Birkett talks to the conductor about the orchestra - and vice versa. Including excerpts from a 1981 concert featuring Haydn's
Symphony No 22 in E flat (Philosopher), Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No 2 in D minor with Shlomo Mintz and Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody, and a 1982 performance of Schoenberg's arrangement of Brahms's Piano Quartet No 1.

Lancaster University, where teams from Glasgow and Lancaster universities will be browsing through the operatic headlines, attempting to find the lost chord, twiddling their tuners and performing their very own triple concerto.
