Time Remembered
The Frankl-Pauk-Kirshbaum Trio celebrates its silver jubilee next year. While retaining their strong individual musical personalities in the ensemble. the three players also create a powerful musical identity as one of the finest piano trios of the last 25 years. Using recordings from the BBC archives made in the early seventies, this programme begins with Schumann's Piano Trio in F, Op 80 and ends with Dvorak's Trio in F minor, Op 65.
Between them, the Notturno in E flat,
D897, a work Schubert discarded from his great Trio in B flat but which is too beautiful to lose.

Six young pianists have progressed to the concerto finals, which take place this evening and tomorrow in the Town Hall, Leeds. Tonight, the first three finalists join Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to perform their concertos.

Louis de Bernieres introduces and reads from his work-in-progress, Birds without Wings. The novel, inspired by some lines from Kazantzakis, is another example of the author's empathy with the past. It is set in the 1920s when Christians were being expelled from Turkey and Muslims from Greece.
